Welcome Home, Baby Brother! {Charleston Newborn Photographer}

I first met this amazing couple while photographing their wedding with the talented Alice Keeney. Since then, I have also had the honor to capture so many other milestones: their daughter’s newborn session, her 1st birthday session and family portraits. They are the nicest, most genuine human beings and it has been such an honor to see them again for her maternity session with her son and his in-home newborn session.
All photos were captured with a Canon Mark III 5D digital camera or on analog film:
35mm Kodak Portra 800 or Fuji 400h // Canon 1V
Medium format Portra 800 // Mamiya RZ67
Film was developed and scanned at VB Photo Lab.
Kristen was kind enough to answer some interview questions about her experience with their in home newborn session.
Tell me about the decor in your baby’s nursery. Do any items have special meaning?

I loved designing this nursery! We used the same furniture as we did for my daughter (now 2), but decorated with different color tones and textures. There are a few pieces that are special, starting with the crib mobile that I handmade myself. I knew what I wanted and couldn’t find it, so I decided to get crafty and it turned out exactly as I had imagined! The artwork that is above the dresser/changing table was custom painted just for the nursery by my friend Bri Catarino. Again, I knew what I wanted, but wasn’t finding it in any stores so I talked to Bri and commissioned these paintings to complete my vision. They were specifically painted with our nursery colors in mind, as well as matching animals to the prints on the crib sheets. Bri also painted the large elephant painting that was in my daughters nursery (and now in her big girl room), so having her paint something for Cohen just made sense.

Was there anything you were nervous or worried about before your session?

Yes, and it happened, haha! Taming a 2-year old is never easy, and Marley wasn’t exactly cooperative – not giving up the blankie or paci, and whining with some tears nearly the entire session.

What do you hope your son will say years down the road when looking at these images?
I hope he can tell how loved he was 🙂
What was your favorite part of the experience?
Watching Jody do her thing! She is great with infants, and every time I am around her I feel like I take away some new tips and tricks to calm baby. She is a definite baby whisperer (and great photographer :)!
