Jody Mack Photography » Charleston and Mount Pleasant's Lifestyle Newborn & Family Photographer

At long last, the wait is over! This gorgeous little newborn girl was a dream to photograph! There were so many special moments captured, from the family dog, who was a little apprehensive about being “de-throned” by a new sibling, to sweet family moments on the very same couch that her mother sat for weeks upon weeks (on modified bed rest), to this beautiful sleepy baby girl, all snuggled down on family heirloom blankets. I just love her sweet smile and the fact that she has her mom’s adorable dimples. Sweetness overload!

I knew as soon as we spoke on the phone that I was going to enjoy working with this sweet mother-to-be on her daughter’s First Year package (they chose Maternity, Lifestyle Newborn, Milestone Mini & First Birthday sessions). She is as sweet and genuine as they come and just as beautiful on the outside! As you can see by the links to her other blog posts (above), I have had the opportunity to watch her little one from the time she was a beautiful baby bump, during her mom’s maternity session, all the way through her Milestone Mini session at 8 months. In just a few more months, they will be celebrating her First Birthday, complete with portraits and a cake smash!

I just love the colors she chose to wear and how they played off of the bright greens of the marsh grasses. This beautiful private dock was perfect for an afternoon stroll, dreaming of the happy days ahead. This ancient live oak tree was just begging to be photographed – such a wonderful symbol of family, growth and fortitude.

It’s hard to believe it was a year ago that I photographed these sweet babies when they were just a few days old. Now they are a year old and full of personality and spunk. Big sister is a year older too and just as sweet and adorable as they come! I kept calling her little sister by big sister’s name… because they are so similar in appearance! Little brother is a spitting image of dad, with his mom’s eyes and expressions. They drove all the way from Murrells Inlet on a very muggy morning, to meet me in Mount Pleasant for their outdoor First Birthday Cake Smash session. I have so many favorites, it was hard for me to decide what I wanted to share!

Here is their mom’s take on preparing for (and surviving) the session:

Were you worried about any parts of the session beforehand?

“Only that the kids would melt down and/or not sit still long enough to get a good shot. I like the idea of a morning shoot as it was getting hot so quickly. If I could only reschedule their birthdays for a cooler month!”

What was your favorite part of your session?

“Probably getting the cake shots. Babies and frosting…always a fun combination.”

Tell me about the outfits you wore to the session.

“I loved the navy/white matching outfits. I wanted something a little more “formal” and classic but still cool on a hot morning.”

Tell me about your favorite images from this session?

“I love the pictures of the babies and their cupcakes! Especially the dead stare from {C} after we took hers away.  Any picture where all three kids are looking in the same general direction, with eyes open and no tears is a WINNER!!!”

Do you have any advice for other families preparing for a First Birthday session?

“If I did this one over again, I would nix the outfit change. By the time I got the babies in their “formal” outfits, they had about enough sitting still. Oh, and bring a diaper cover for the cake shots :)”

“Lucky for us, Jody is awesome! This is our 4th shoot with her and she always gets the shot. She is a mom. She knows the window for success is short. As I am dressing/ undressing, fixing hair, attaching bows, wiping noses…she is shooting away. There is so much going on and as the parent you don’t have time to help the photographer set up the shot….and with Jody, you don’t have to. She gets there early, has a plan and is ready as soon as you are. She takes control which is so appreciated.”

I had such a hard time with this blog post in the wake of the tragic events that happened in Charleston last week. Our city, and the beautiful and courageous people who have called this place home, have been shaken to the core. My heart goes out to the families of those 9 victims of the shooting at Emanuel AME and to all of the families in this city – and in this country – that are impacted by prejudice and acts of hate.  As a mother, I can’t imagine the grief. There are no words.

I think there is no other better tribute to a city than it’s beauty and it’s people. As photographers, we have the unique ability to share our perspectives not in words, but in photographs (thank goodness… because writing is not my strong suit).  So here is the blog as written before the events of last week:

May 2015 was an action-packed month, and in the middle of it all, a group of Pinkle Toes Photography Workshop alumni gathered in our beautiful city of Charleston for a reunion. Pinkle Toes Photography workshops are taught by the one and only, Michele Anderson of Austin, TX.  One of the best decisions I have ever made for my business was attending her workshop in Charlotte, NC in 2013. She is one of the very best lifestyle photographers in the country and has so much knowledge to share. And besides that, she is super hilarious and is a genuine beauty, inside and out.

This blog post is part of a “blog circle” so make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this post and see the next blog post about this reunion… there are so many talented ladies in this group!

During our 3 days, we spent so much time laughing that our faces hurt, talked plenty of shop and photographed so many places and people that it took me days to go through all of the images.  I experienced so many things I (shamefully) still haven’t done since I moved to Charleston 9 years ago:

1. Shot an impromptu Maternity Session (the mom was expecting twins… such a gorgeous family. They never had professional photos done before so it was a special treat for them!)

2. Went on a Culinary Tour (delish!)

3. Photographed a sunrise near the Morris Island Lighthouse (I’m more of a sunset gal… plus, we had to get up at 4:30am to drive out there and we were RUNNING to get out there to beat the sunrise.)

4. Took an actual tour of Boone Hall Plantation.

5. Stopped to photograph wildflowers and just-for-fun portraits… because we can!

6. Ate breakfast at the Lost Dog Cafe (shameful… I know!)

7. Attended a Pure Barre class (#stillsore)

I am looking forward to the next workshop reunion ladies! {hugs to you all}

The next stop on this journey is a blog post by Becky Keller of Rebecca Keller Photography – Raleigh Newborn Photographer. Becky is a superstar lifestyle newborn photographer in Raleigh, North Carolina and her work was recently published in People Magazine!

Here is a complete list of the reunion attendees! I highly suggest clicking on their names (I’ve linked their photography websites below). They are all amazing artists and I highly recommend them if you live in their areas!

The wait is over. Your newborn baby girl is finally here. Big sister and brothers are absolutely smitten!  She is such a beautiful little newborn and slept so well for me in all her comfy poses. She even stayed asleep during most of the lifestyle photos with her family and through all the hugs and kisses from her family.  My personal favorite image of her dad holding her with the lyrics to “You Are My Sunshine” on the wall behind them.  So sweet, so serene. PINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGEPINIMAGE
